The Euclid Tavern is one of Cleveland's legendary live music venues. Established in 1909, the "Euc" became a fixture on the local music scene in the 1970's and early 1980's under the ownership of Bob Jost and Paul Devito, featuring regular gigs by acts including Mr. Stress, the Numbers Band, Chrissie Hynde, Peter Laughner and others. In 1987, the Euc served as the location for Director Paul Schrader's film " Light of Day," starring Joan Jett and Michael J. Fox as members of the fictional band, The Barbreakers, a band inspired by Cleveland's own Generators.
In the early 1990's, Derek Hess was booking shows, bringing in acts like Pavement, Guided By Voices, Helmet and Green Day. In addition to booking great acts, Hess - then a student at nearby Cleveland Institute of Art - drew promotional flyers and posters for the shows, going on to become an internationally recognized artist, with works in the permanent collections at the Louvre in Paris and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right here in Cleveland. We've got a few of his finest hanging in the bar, too...
The Euc went through a few ownership changes starting in the late 1990's, closing in 2001, and re-opening periodically through the 2000's before closing again in early 2013, when University Circle, Inc. bought the building and reached out to the Happy Dog to breath new life into the space. We worked with University Circle to update the space, moving the stage and upgrading the sound system, but respecting the history of the space. We re-opened the club in late 2014, calling it the Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern, because we knew this club was, is, and always would be the Euclid Tavern. We are happy to be a part of this chapter in the history of this great space.
Like our original spot on Cleveland's west side, we are a neighborhood corner bar - with hot dogs and beer, and lots of live music, from rock and country, to punk and polka. We host talks by folks from Northeast Ohio's great cultural and educational institutions, along with visiting scholars and academics, and we've got a bunch of great pinball machines, too. Just like the west side, we've got a bar in the basement - the Underdog - where we host smaller events and parties.
We're open seven days a week for lunch starting at 11am, and we stay open late (2:30 am) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (we're open till 12:30am the rest of the week) We've got a big parking lot across the street from us, and parking is FREE after 6pm - but they do enforce the meters during the day. If you are interested in booking your band to play Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern please email us at HappyDogBook@gmail.com and if you are interested in reserving space for a party or onsite/offsite catering please email us at EuclidTavernparties@gmail.com.
