The one-time popular burger joint, which first opened in Modesto in 1968, is back. Fourteen years after it flipped its last burger, Smoky’s has returned, thanks to former owner Mike Nelson and his business partner Darryl Johnson.
Nelson has owned a string of eateries over the past 30 years, most recently Mike’s Grillhouse and Mike’s Roadhouse. Johnson is the owner of United Sign Systems for over 20 years. So, with their 25-year friendship, these two combined forces to bring a classic back to Modesto.
Smoky’s Neighborhood Grill has many of the same menu items as the original Smoky’s – burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, tri-tip, and roast turkey. And, of course, Rudy’s Chili Cheese Dog, a Smoky’s staple named after Nelson’s father.
The restaurant, which seats over a 100 people, is tailored to clientele in Modesto and surrounding areas. Smoky’s serves breakfast and lunch with quick, quality items at reasonable prices.
In addition to our lunch fare, the menu includes from-scratch breakfast items and baked goods, as well as specialty Clayton's coffee drinks and hand-scooped shakes.
