Lucius Q is a laid back neighborhood establishment serving smoked meats, simple sides, craft beers, and spirits along with live entertainment.
The city of Cincinnati was named for Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus (519-430 BC), a Roman aristocrat and statesman. Cincinnatus was highly regarded for his leadership abilities and selfless sacrifice. His stories are legend. (Seriously. Just Google him.)
In spite of his lofty stature within Roman society, Lucius was a regular Joe…a man of the people, if you will. Yes, his company vehicle was a chariot, but his other ride was a beat up Jeep Wrangler for which he lost the doors years ago.
He was known around the neighborhood for a lot of things - civic virtue, military leadership – the typical kind of stuff that leads to having a city in Ohio named after you a thousand years later. But, he was also know for known for smoking the best Texas brisket in the entire Roman Empire. True story.
When Lucius came out of retirement to lead an army of his compatriots against the invading Aequi army, a warlike tribe of people from west central Italy, he first dug a pit and smoked enough meat to feed an army. Literally. They ate their fill, flossed, took a nap, and then, with faces painted red with barbecue sauce, marched off to face their foe.
After whipping the invaders, the Roman senate offered Lucius Q a lifetime of authoritarian rule over the Republic as thanks for saving their butts. But Lucius had other plans. He handed back the keys to the kingdom, hopped in his Jeep, and rode back home to his barbecue pit to work on an idea for a new pork rub.
Twenty-five hundred years later in the Pendleton neighborhood of Cincinnati, a restaurant and community hub is being built on the same principal of civic virtue that Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was famous for.
“Civic virtue” is defined in Wikipedia as, “the cultivation of habits of personal living that are claimed to be important for the success of the community. Civic virtue is also the dedication of citizens to the common welfare of their community even at the cost of their individual interests.” This is the guiding principal of our philosophy at Lucius Q. The name itself serves as a constant reminder of the importance of civic virtue. At the same time, it pays homage to the City of Cincinnati and the luscious bar-b-Q that we will be known for.
