Q&A:
Q- How do you heat your greenhouses?
A- We burn used motor oil that comes from the pipeline compressor stations in Sublette and surrounding counties. We are licensed with the DEQ to store and burn this used oil. We store up to 34,000 gallons of oil in large tanks, then clean-burn it at 2800 degrees F to heat the greenhouses.

Q- I have some used motor oil; do you want it?
A- We transport the used oil in a tanker truck. If you have a quantity of 50 gallons or more of used oil that we can certify has no contaminants in it, then please give us a call! If you have changed the oil in your car, then unfortunately we do NOT have a mechanism to move that oil into our tanks.

Q- How large are your greenhouses?
A- As of 2012 we have about 36,000 sq. ft. in our greenhouses.

Q- Are you organic?
A- YES! Although we had always grown naturally, in 2010 we officially became certified organic by the Montana State Department of Agriculture.

Q- How did you come up with the name "WYOMATOES"?
A- It is a combination of the words "Wyoming" and "tomatoes"; the O and M being common to both is where the words combine to form "Wyomatoes"! LaFon Ward came up with the name back in 1992 (Thanks LaFon!!).

Q- Can I call any tomato grown in Wyoming, "Wyomatoes"?
A- No! The name is trademarked. No one can legally use the name without it coming from our farm.

Q- What and how much do you grow?
A- As you can tell from the name, we primarily grow tomatoes. Several years ago we also added basil and european cucumbers. We often experiment with other crops such as beets, onions, carrots, squash blossoms, and even bananas!

Q- Why don't you grow a larger variety of vegetables?
A- While we appreciate ideas of what we might grow, in a greenhouse it comes down to how much money can be made per square foot with the same growing conditions that we must use for our tomatoes. Feel free to make suggestions, but don't be disappointed if we are unable to run with your idea.

Q- Who does all of the picking, packing, and caring for all the plants?
A- Our farm workers come to us from Mexico on agricultural visas. They are excellent, and highly skilled workers!

Q- Why don't you hire Americans?
A- We are located in an area of gas and oil fields. Locals gravitate toward the high-paying drilling/production jobs in the area.

Q- Do you grow hydroponically?
A- No. We only grow in the soil as Mother Nature intended. Hydroponics cannot be grown organically. The biological activity in the soil is needed to provide the flavor and nutrient values.
