A small wooden house hidden behind trees where great books, tea, shakes & smoothies, good food, the best chai tea and selected movies can be found! Everything you need to feel cozy and homey far away from home.....
L’Etranger, Books & Tea, named after Albert Camus’s novel “L’Etranger” (The Stranger ), opened its door in March 2001. It is located in a small rosewood house, in Ban Aphay, Luang Prabang, Laos, at the foot of Phousy Hill, on the opposite side from the Royal Palace/Main Street.
We specialize in good literature but offer anything from bestsellers, great classics, non-fiction, travel novels & guides, to children’s books in English. We also have sections with French, German and many other foreign language books. Our selection is of superior quality because most of our books are imported from overseas.
We sell, rent, buy and trade. We offer credit on books, food, drinks or cash. Credit can also be used at hive.
In response to the difficulty of getting books in Laos, we reserved a section of our shop and dedicated it as a library so anyone with the wish to read has the opportunity to a large selection of great books and magazines. Lao People can borrow books for free. Foreigners can RENT for a minimal fee. 2000kip/hour, 5000/day. Deposit is required.
Donations are greatly appreciated. Either in our dedicated donation box or by mail at: P.O. Box 148, Luang Prabang, Laos 06000
The Tea Lounge
On our 2nd floor, we have a lounge art & tea room. Cushions, low tables, sa paper lamps set the mood. A collection of National Geographic (from the 60s to present) are displayed on the walls and are available to read on-site. Every night @ 7pm, we show non-mainstream films. A weekly schedule is available.
We offer snacks (breakfast, soup, salads, sandwiches and vegetarian dishes), a variety of cold drinks (shakes, smoothies, coffee/chocolate/_mocha specialty drinks) and more than 65 different types of tea (black, green, herbal and local teas; and a homemade chai tea) and a variety of coffee beverages.
We also have a front terrace where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast, light snack or a nice pot of tea.
As far as the environment is concern, we try to help by offering free water bottle refills and only have bamboo straws. Every gesture makes a difference!
Our opening hours are 7am-10pm every day. Sundays 10-10 pm.
