Best Western Cartland Bridge Hotel

The History of the Best Western Cartland Bridge Hotel

Best Western Cartland Bridge Hotel (formerly Baronald House) was built on the Baronald Estate in the late 1880’s as the private residence of Mr James Farie of Farme. The Architect, Sir John James Burnet, exhibited the House designs in the Munich Fine Art Exhibition in 1890 and the RSA Exhibition in London in 1891. It took four years of work to create this magnificent House which displays wonderful examples of craftsmanship throughout; the splendour of the magnificent fireplace and the richness of the panelling and woodwork. In the 1800’s you could commission such works for the princely sum of £500,000. The Building is now Category A Listed.

Baronald House provided a home for the Faries until 1939 when it was used by the War Office. After the War, the House lay empty for a while, but later became an inebriates Home which closed in 1954 before being reborn as Cartland Bridge Hotel in 1962 under the supervision of the Russell/Laird families. In 1988 the Hotel was advertised for sale and planning permission for a nursing home was refused and it eventually re-opened under new ownership.

Like many old houses, the hotel has many stories to tell......... The Farie Family had a Daughter called Annie, who met an untimely death when she was killed in a riding accident in the grounds aged 7 years. Annie’s portrait takes pride of place above the fireplace in the Portrait Room Restaurant and her Ghost still visits the House from time to time, particularly fond of turning up in what was her “Doll’s Room” now a bedroom!

The graciousness and splendour of times past does not stop inside the Hotel but is also much in evidence in the 19 acres of woodland and gardens surrounding the Hotel. Many of the trees and rare specimens were brought here by Captain Farie from voyages overseas and are still resplendent in their glory for us to admire and enjoy.

Today, our Chef uses as much local and Scottish produce as possible and prepares mouth-watering and tempting dishes in the House’s original kitchens for you to enjoy.
